Tear gas fired at Bersih 3.0

Why the Need for Bersih 3.0?
by Kee Thuan Chye

The call to rally has been made. There's going to be a Bersih 3.0. Those who have been waiting for it are ecstatic.

April 28 is the day, and this time the anti-Lynas group, Himpunan Hijau, will be joining in. It looks like this is going to be more than just about electoral reform. It seems to have gone beyond that. It looks like those who are going to turn up for the rally will be declaring their stand against the Government and its administration of the country.

Malaysian police have clashed with thousands of protesters who are calling for an overhaul of the country's electoral system.

Security forces fired tear gas and water cannon at demonstrators in the capital Kuala Lumpur.

Al Jazeera's Harry Fawcett, reporting from the capital Kuala Lumpur, says he himself has experienced "some police violence".

Malaysian police have clashed with tens of thousands of protesters calling for an overhaul of the country's electoral system.

Security forces in the capital fired tear gas and water cannon at the demonstrators, after they broke through a barricade near Independence square.

Malik Imtiaz Sarwar, a Malaysian lawyer and president of the National Human Rights Society, tells Al Jazeera the demonstrators should have been allowed to protest peacefully.
